Les Yvelines viola da gamba

Bass viola da gamba. Spruce soundboard, figured maple sides and back, maple neck, maple fingerboard with toile de Jouy (textile pattern from Les Yvelines in France). French polish finish, gut strings.

This viola da gamba was a challenge I took on in order to strengthen my carving and making archtop chops given that I was trained in flat-top instruments. Moreover this was the opportunity to explore on a large surface the versatility of natural dies, both the deep blue and pink come from beet juice, the hues varied by PH control. The Toile de Jouy on the fingerboard is a traditional French pattern from the region my mother is from, Les Yvelines, this pattern is printed on Tvyek instead of fabric as it is a wear and tear resistant material. Going for a new old school!
